For the past few weeks I’ve had the fantastic pleasure of visiting one of the true – but under valued – design capitals of the world, Miami & Miami Beach.
I cut into my beach time to bring you a few highlights any design conscious traveler should check out (especially those heading to Winter Music Conference in a few weeks!).
After taking a walk along Ocean Drive to check out the beach and art deco architecture, the first stop for anyone looking to do some shopping should be Miami Beach’s fantastic pedestrian shopping street, Lincoln Road. Obvious highlights were the small, but well equipped concept store Base, which is packed with trendy clothes, books and music.
Then, it’s only a short walk to Design Within Reach, located just next door. DWR is a North American wide chain that carries all the big things you need in your design-oriented life (chairs, desks, beds…) from all the big names in the industry. Granted, not the easiest stuff to get onto a plane, it’s always a great browse).
If Lincoln wasn’t enough head down to Collins Ave and check out the Kid Robot concept store. Kid Robot has been flying the flag for edgy but playful gear and toys for grown-ups for some time now. Not for everyone’s tastes but it makes great gifts.
When you’re done shopping head to The Standard for a drink and watch the sunset from their pool-bar and then if you’re in a partying mood head over to Louis or Bella Rose (especially if its Sunday for their Black Sunday night).
If you’re going to head to the mainland then look no further than the Miami Design District. Surely one of the jewels of the design world, these few square blocks are PACKED with street art, galleries, studios and shops. There are always events going on so check out the website.
For accommodations, check out “The Art Hotel” Sagamore, where I had the pleasure of attending their new art-lined lobby bar’s opening or the Mondrian.
When you’re in Miami Beach make sure you keep your eyes on boutique network Plum TV Miami Beach (my gracious hosts during my time there) for coverage on all the parties and events going on.
